This basic idea is of great importance in all language research, especially in studying spoken language, language variation, the phenomenon of language contact, and language use in general. Students are trained to examine the meaning of language in terms of two branches of linguistics; semantics and pragmatics. Semantics studies context-independent meanings, while pragmatics studies context-bound meanings. They are in different rooms of linguistic analysis but closely interrelated and complementary. The semantic analysis focuses on the conceptual meaning of words. Pragmatic analysis, on the other hand, has aspects of meaning that depend more on context and speaker intent. In other words, communication relies not only on recognizing the meaning of the words contained in the utterance but also on recognizing the speaker's intention through the utterance. To understand its semantic meaning, we need three main components: (1) the context of the sentence, (2) the meaning of the words in the sentence, and 3) the morphological and syntactic structure of the sentence. Meanwhile, to make sense of a speaker’ intention, we need two main components: (1) semantic meaning and (2) context of use. |
